At Lectura Lounge, we offer a wide variety of programs dedicated to literacy, multilingualism, and community-building, all free to our community.
Reading Buddies/Compadres de Lectura
Volunteers read in their dominant language to participants whose primary language is opposite theirs. Build confidence, sharpen listening skills, boost imagination and vocabulary, and make friends! A complimentary light meal is served before each session.
¡Divertimos! (Let's Have Fun!)
Drop-in sessions hosted by native Spanish-speaking activity leaders, featuring games, conversation, and crafts—todos en español, por supuesto. Dual Language Immersion students can practice their Spanish throughout the school year, and those wanting to learn Spanish are welcome to join and be immersed! A complimentary light meal (or snacks) is served at 5:30.
Chinese Calligraphy & Traditional Chinese Painting
Learning Chinese calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting offers many benefits for both the mind and the body. These practices help regulate breathing, posture, and mental focus. They can effectively reduce distractions, relieve stress, stabilize emotions, and cultivate patience and concentration.
Through calligraphy practice, students are also exposed to a wealth of classical Chinese poetry and literature, which naturally enhances their cultural literacy, language skills, and appreciation of Chinese aesthetics.
Cuizhen Domke, who will be teaching this class, has more than five years of experience at AACA (Asian Arts & Culture Association). She is highly skilled in Chinese calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, and mural art. While respecting and nurturing each child’s unique personality and creativity, she helps students develop artistic skills and improve their Chinese language proficiency.
Orton-Gillingham
Serena Mueller, owner of Silver Creek Speech Therapy, has offered group reading instruction classes at the Lounge. She uses the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is a multisensory phonics technique for children learning how to read, spell, and write.
