OUR PROGRAMS
At Lectura Lounge, we offer a wide variety of programs dedicated to literacy multilingualism, and community-building, all free to our community.

Reading Buddies/Compadres de Lectura
Volunteers read in their dominant language to participants whose primary language is opposite theirs. Build confidence, sharpen listening skills, boost imagination and vocabulary, and make friends! A complimentary light meal is served before each session. Join an upcoming session!

Banned Book Babes
Do we think that the BEST books are banned? Well, Judy Silver (our Thursday Reading Buddies/Compadres de Lectura facilitator) and Monica Schaffer (local retired pediatrician and star volunteer at the Lounge) want to find out! They will read, discuss, and analyze books that have been banned in Utah. First meeting is on March 10th at Lectura Lounge. Doors open at 6:00 for mix-mingling, and the discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The term "babes" refers to all genders, and the only requirement for admission is to have read the first book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky, and to bring a book for a book swap. Potluck dessert contributions are welcome and much appreciated. The club caps at 25, so don't wait to sign up! RSVP at caseyandcharley.org/event-details/banned-book-babes

¡Divertimos! (Let's Have Fun!) With Mayra and Naomi
Drop-in sessions hosted by native Spanish-speaking activity leaders, featuring games, conversation, and crafts—todos en español, por supuesto. Dual Language Immersion students can practice their Spanish throughout the school year, and those wanting to learn Spanish are welcome to join and be immersed! A complimentary light meal is served at 5:30.

Mandarin With Haiyan (session dates TBD)
Haiyan Zang combines learning of the Chinese language with other important skills such as time management, budgeting, cooking, etc. so that students are more ready for independent adult life. For younger kids, Haiyan will help improve math skills, as well as teach Chinese painting while learning Mandarin. For more info, email haiyan@kw.com.

Community Storytelling Dinners
New year, new program? Join us on Wednesday, February 11 and 25, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., as we pilot a storytelling gathering where community and connection take lead. Bring a story ready to share, or be inspired by one of our prompts. Potluck contributions are welcome and appreciated. For more info, email lcbannerman@gmail.com.

Orton-Gillingham classes with Serena
Serena Mueller, owner of Silver Creek Speech Therapy, continues to offer group reading instruction classes for $10 per child (to cover the cost of supplies) at the Lounge. Sessions are held on Mondays at 3:45 p.m., approximately 35 minutes long, and designed for kids in pre-K or early kindergarten. Serena uses the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is a multisensory phonics technique for children learning how to read, spell, and write. If you’re interested in having your child participate, you can contact her at 435-565-1509 or serena@silvercreekspeech.com. Or just show up to the class!
